We meet the third Sunday of every month (except April, June, July and August) from
1:30 p.m. to about 4:00 p.m., at the Tom Brown Arena, 141 Bayview Road, Ottawa. Click
here for directions and map. Meetings are open to members, guests and non-members
and everyone is welcome. However, to help defray Society costs we ask non-members
to pay a small admission fee of $5.00 per meeting. Of course, admission to all monthly
meetings (nine per year) is included with membership, currently only $25 per year.
Meetings usually feature an invited speaker, a demonstration or a hands-on workshop.
Our invited speakers are local and international orchid experts, many of whom bring
plants for sale from their greenhouses. Additional plants and grower supplies are
offered for sale at most meetings by Society members. Refreshments are available
at meetings free of charge.
A highlight of each meeting is the Show Table where members bring in their flowering
plants for display and judging. Plants are judged in each orchid alliance and ribbons
are awarded as well as a “Best of Show Table” rosette. This is an excellent opportunity
to share knowledge related to specific orchids and their growing conditions.
From time to time we organize special events in addition to the monthly meetings.
Examples may include visits to local horticultural attractions, group orders of plants
from a particular vendor, visits to local orchid nurseries, etc. Details will be
provided in our newsletter (Spike). The Society also offers a tour of local members'
growing areas in June.
